001.
‘Nara’s are always painted a real pretty red-color. ‘Fi ever tried doin’ it, you can sure bet it’d get chipped right off ‘least an hour later.
Serenity don’t like things bein’ too clean. She starts ta actin’ up, see. Playin’ tricks on ya, and stops talkin’ to me right out.
Last time I did it to my toes, and they’re always covered up by somethin’. But Serenity the sneaky lil’ minx, she sure knew. Blew out a couple rotors that had justa been replaced not 3 months ‘fore.
I’ve seen Mal yell at me somethin’ harsh before, and he’s even given it to ‘Nara pretty rough too, but she never not once flinched.
It was weird seein’ her do it now, all because-a me.

002.
My pa used to tell me stories of Earth-that-was.
Truth for tellin’, he never described one thing that ya couldn’t find nowadays. I don’t know why the stories are so fascinatin’. Maybe it’s all them different people mushed together on one tiny ol’ rock.
I’ve never been to a place where they let lotsa different folk in at once. S’pose it just causes trouble; sure were ‘nough wars on Earth-that-was.
I s’pose same could be said ‘bout Serenity. Ya got the grumpy cap’n, his slightly ironical first mate, the crazy pilot – a gussied Companion. There’s the dirty muscle, and now a sophisticated doctor. We got a sweet young girl and even a preacher!
Guess really, we got our own little Earth-that-was after all.

003.
He was one of only three of us who could really hear her. She talked to him too, only in a different way than me. She trusted him with the controls; knew he’d take care of her and us.
I guess she was the wind; if’n he was a leaf.

004.
I dunno if Cap’n’s like a pa, so much as a big brother or somethin’. I can talk back to him long as I do roughly what he wants. I can talk to him easy. Even though he tries to be all detachable and cold, the Cap’n’s all warm and fuzzy inside.
S’pose the war, maybe even just losin’ it, did a real number on him.
Zoe used to think I was just a lucky li’l girl. I overheard her tellin’ Mal that I was too young and naïve to be of any use. I’d like to see her take the engine apart and rewire it to give it ‘nother 3 years’ use.
Well, I more liked seein’ her face after I did it. She don’t question my ability no more.

005.
Wash done a darn beautiful job with the bridge’s control panel. On’y person I know could’a done better is my pa.
He got me, ya know? He was kind of a kid hisself, and since he loved Serenity much as me, I respected him second only to Mal. Everytime I get a glance at his rewirin’ job I get all teary still.

006.
I reckon Jayne eyed me for a week ‘fore Cap’n made his first air-lock threat to him. Maybe I would’a done somethin’ with him eventually, but he’s not really my type. I like ‘em a bit, er, prettier than what Jayne is.

007.
I grew up ‘round boys. My dad, brothers, cousins, everyone seemed to be men. ‘Nara, Zoe and River are like the older and younger sisters I never got. ‘Nara’s always givin’ advice and Zoe always gets Cap’n off’n my back. River well she just likes to play and bug me in the engine room.

008.
I liked Shepherd first time I let eyes on him. The way he looked at Serenity; she just called him out. It was maybe the look in his eyes that told me he was leavin’ everything behind. He was all twisty inside, but he wasn’t too much broken.

009.
Simon’s just too book-smart for his own good. And he’s preoccupied with li’l River. But now that we all know she can take care-a herself (an’ prolly all of us, too) there’s not too much for him to dwell on.
Which leaves him open all to me.

…and his darned books.
